One cannot go far in our valley with out running into the native
influence in the form of art, sculpture or totem
poles. Duncan is called “The city of Totems”. A local carver is
making
silver jewelry depicting the alpaca and has adopted alpacas into
his life. There is also interest in making Cowichan Sweaters out of
alpaca yarn. The fiber industry is especially important to our large
native population, one of the largest communities in Canada. The
Cowichan people are the creators of the Cowichan sweater, which is an
important trade for many families here in the valley
We live and work off our farm, running a small engineering practice, bringing up our children and raising alpacas. Our farm is small and we would like to remain small. As a small farm, we can concentrate on good foundation stock for our breeding programs. Our goal is to produce solid dark colored alpacas with a fine crimpy fiber and pounds of it. Although we have only been involved with alpacas for a couple of years we are well on our way to achieving our goal.
We chose alpacas after a stint at breeding warm blood horses giving us a real appreciation for the easy and relative thrift of breeding and owning alpacas. As each day goes by our animals show us new and wonderful things about their nature. They are such gentle quiet creatures singing their soft humming songs. We love just hanging out in the barn spending time with them.
Feel free to e-mail us at any time even if you are just curious. We enjoy sharing about these wonderful animals and never tire of speaking about them. It is about the animals and the enjoyment they bring to our lives. |
